vivica genaux
mezzo-soprano
The mezzo-soprano Vivica Genaux is recognized as one of the foremost interpreters of Baroque and bel canto music. Nominated for three Grammy Awards, she has performed on the most prestigious stages worldwide (London, Paris, Washington, Berlin, New York, Vienna, Madrid, Venice, San Francisco, Salzburg, Zurich, Munich...).
Her extensive repertoire, spanning five centuries of music, is consolidated with acclaimed interpretations of Rossini's comic heroines in titles such as L'italiana in Algeri, Il barbiere di Siviglia, and La Cenerentola at the beginning of her career, followed by her exploration of Baroque and bel canto roles by composers such as Handel, Scarlatti, Vivaldi, Gluck, Monteverdi, and Donizetti, up to Berlioz and Verdi. Among her other notable roles are Arsace in Semiramide, Sesto and Giulio Cesare in the opera of the same name, Romeo in I Capuleti ed i Montecchi, Orsini in Lucrezia Borgia, Orfeo in Orfeo ed Euridice, and Ottavia in L'incoronazione di Poppea, among others.
In recent years, she expands this list with works such as Handel's oratorio Belshassar (Theater an der Wien, Vienna), Pergolesi's L'Olimpiade (Opernhaus, Zurich), Vivaldi's Orlando furioso (Konzerthaus, Dortmund), Broschi's Idaspe and Merope, Vivaldi's Argippo and Juditha Triumphans (as Holofernes and Vagaus), Handel's Tamerlano, Il Trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno, and The Triumph of Time and Truth, to name a few examples.
In addition to her intense activity in the operatic realm, she combines this work with a continuous presence at festivals and concert halls: BBC Proms in London, Rome, Prague, Halle, Festival de St. Denis, Montpellier, San Remo, Konzerthaus in Vienna, Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow, São Paulo, Buenos Aires, and Carnegie Hall in New York, among others.
Her significant career has allowed her to collaborate with the most prominent Baroque ensembles and build an extensive discography that continues to grow steadily.
As an additional aspect of her career, Genaux undertakes significant efforts for the recovery and programming of the works of Johann Adolf Hasse. Her endeavors were acknowledged in 2019 with the Hasse Award presented by the Johann-Adolf-Hasse Foundation. She also received the Handel Prize from the City of Halle in 2017, further enriching her collection of awards, which includes the ARIA Award in 1997, the Christopher Keene Award from the New York City Opera in 2007, and the Maecenas Award from the Pittsburgh Opera in 2008.
Furthermore, Genaux's interest and dedication to sharing her experience and passion for vocal arts are evident in her close collaboration with opera studios as a teacher and her participation as a judge in competitions worldwide.
