stage direction
Renowned for his opera productions at the Gran Teatro Nacional del Perú and his contemporary adaptations of classical works such as Molière's "El misántropo" and Calderón de la Barca's "La vida es sueño", Jean Pierre Gamarra holds a master's degree in directing from the Accademia per l’Opera italiana and has trained in opera direction at the High Institute of Art of the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires.
He began his career in 2011 by directing Mozart's opera Idomeneo, re di Creta at the Teatro Municipal de Lima. Since then, his collaborations have continued with spaces in South America, especially in Peru and Colombia, with titles such as Le nozze di Figaro, Die Zauberflöte, Pollicino by Hans Werner Henze, Ollanta by Valle Riestra, The Little Prince by Rachel Portman, and the contemporary opera Erase que era una niña by Timo-Juhani Kyllonen, among others.
One of his recent projects that stands out is his staging of Giuseppe Verdi's opera Alzira, the first co-production between the Gran Teatro Nacional del Perú and the Ministry of Culture of Peru with European theaters, namely the Opéra Royal de Wallonie (Liege, Belgium) and the Asociación Bilbaína de Amigos de la Ópera (ABAO). This work was chosen as the best Latin American production by the Spanish association Ópera XXI, 2020.
Furthermore, it's worth highlighting his new collaborations with the Gran Teatro Nacional, within the programming of the Granda Festival, with productions of Carmen and more recently, La Bohème.
Jean Pierre Gamarra is the director of the theater company Éxodo Teatro and the artistic director of the Classical Theater season presented at the Teatro Municipal de Lima.
