stage direction
Known for his opera productions for Gran Teatro Nacional del Perú, Jean Pierre Gamarra holds a master's degree in stage direction from the Accademia per l'Opera italiana and trained in opera stage at Instituto Superior de Arte del Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires.
He begins his career in 2011 directing Mozart's opera Idomeneo, re di Creta at Teatro Municipal de Lima, followed by the contemporary opera Erase que era una niña composed by Timo-Juhani Kyllonen for Centro Cultural Británico de Miraflores (Peru). Two years later, he makes her debut at Gran Teatro Nacional del Perú with La ciudad bajo el mar, with libretto by Maritza Nuñez and music by Nilo Velarde.
He continues his collaborations with both theatres, with excellent reviews in both venues. His projects at Municipal de Lima include Le nozze di Figaro and Die Zauberflöte, and at Nacional de Perú, Hans Werner Henze's Pollicino and Rachel Portman's The little prince.
In 2017 he directs Così fan tutte as part of Lima Ópera Fest at the city's Teatro Municipal, thanks to the sponsorship of the VAO-Italia, and in 2021 he repeats The little prince at Teatro Colón in Bogotá with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Bogotá and the Ópera Nacional de Colombia.
Of his latest projects, his staging of Giuseppe Verdi's opera Alzira, the first co-production of Gran Teatro Nacional del Perú and the country's Ministry of Culture with European theatres, on this occasion, Opéra Royal de Wallonie (Liège, Belgium) and the Asociación Bilbaína de Amigos de la Ópera (ABAO), is particularly noteworthy. As part of this co-production, Gamarra debuts this year in Bilbao and soon in Liège. This work is chosen as the best Latin American production by the Spanish association Ópera XXI.
After his time in Bilbao, he returns to Bogota to direct the opera Carmen at Gran Teatro Nacional, as part of the Granda Festival programme.
Upcoming projects include Molière's The Misanthrope at Teatro de la Alianza Francesa in Lima, the revival of the Peruvian opera Ollanta, again at Nacional de Perú, a contemporary version of Euripides' Medea in Teatro Municipal de Lima's Classical Theatre season, and for Lima Ópera Fest, a new production of Rigoletto.
