Born in Santander (Spain), Alejandro del Cerro begins studying piano and singing at the conservatory of that city, and later moves to Madrid where he graduates with honors in the High School of Singing, with teachers Pilar Pérez-Íñigo and Julio Alexis Muñoz, being awarded with the Special Prize. He is also awarded in various competitions such as the International Zarzuela Ana Maria Iriarte and the International Singing Competition City of Logroño.
In 2001 he debuts on stage with the 'zarzuela' Katiuska by Sorozábal in the role of Prince Sergio. Since then he plays various roles as Rinuccio of Gianni Schicchi, Pepillo of El barquillero, Cascada of The merry widow, José María of La Chulapona, Guglielmo of Le convenienze ed inconvenienze teatrali by Donizetti and master of ceremonies of Don Gil de Alcalá.
In 2009 he is invited to participate in the first International Music Festival of Spanish and Latin American in Kansas (USA), performing a concert tour in different cities.
In 2010 and 2011 also sings in Lisbon with the Metropolitan Orchestra of the city, in Bucharest in Romanian Lyceum and at National Opera of Slovakia, as well as at Spanish concert halls as Auditorio Nacional and Teatro Monumental, both in Madrid.
Among his works are remarkable the roles of Gustavo of Los gavilanes (Madrid), Arturo of Lucia di Lammermoor (Pamplona), Ivan of La leyenda del beso (Las Palmas), his debut at Teatro de la Zarzuela (Madrid) in La Tempranica, conducted by Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, El huésped del sevillano and Katiuska, again in Las Palmas, and the role of Malcolm of Macbeth (Córdoba).
Career highlights include his debut at Teatro Real in I vespri siciliani and new collaborations in Parsifal, La Favorita and Lucia di Lammermoor.
In 2016 and 2017 he assumes important challenges. After his debut as Cassio at Teatro Calderón in Valladolid (Spain), Lensky of Eugene Onegin at Zomeropera Festival (Belgium) and Faust in Oviedo and the Dorset Festival (UK), he performs the leading roles of Marina and La tabernera del puerto at Zarzuela in Madrid, and Leonardo of Cecilia Valdés at Teatro Colón in Bogotá.
2018 starts with his debut at Liceu of Barcelona in Poliuto and the leading role of the new opera El pintor, in the world premiere of this co-production between Teatro Real and Teatros del Canal. Also, a new engagement at the Zarzuela in Katiuska.
Recent commitments include the role of Cardona in Doña Francisquita at Liceu and Messiah by Haendel at L'Auditori, both in Barcelona, his debut as Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor and Laërte in Thomas'Hamlet at Teatro Campoamor in Oviedo and his return at Zarzuela in Luisa Fernanda, Los gavilanes, Entre Sevilla y Triana and more recently, Tabaré.
Highlights include his debut in a leading role in Donizetti's Viva la mamma at Teatro Real and the role of Narraboth in Salome at the Auditorio de Madrid, with the Orquesta y Coro Nacionales de España, conducted by its conductor David Afkham. More recently, he takes part in Rufus Wainwright's opera Hadrian, playing the role of Trajan, a title he subsequently repeats at Festival de Peralada, and performs for the first time at Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville in Roberto Devereux.
He will soon add two new works to his symphonic repertoire: Verdi's Requiem with the Orquesta de Córdoba and Malher's Das Lied von der Erde with the Joven Orquesta de Andalucía.
