Born in Segovia, Cristina del Barrio is currently one of the young Spanish mezzo-sopranos with the greatest projection within the national lyrical scene. She graduates with honors in the Higher Music Center of the Basque Country (Musikene) with the soprano Ana María Sánchez, she subsequently completes a master's degree in Vocal Interpretation with the internationally famous pianist-repertoirer Maciej Pikulski. She participates in master classes with artists such as Renata Scotto, Udo Reinemann and Sophie Hervé, among others, and since 2014, she works with the renowned American teacher Dale Fundling.
As the winner in 2016 of the International Lyrical Contest Teatro Besostri di Mede (Pavia), she is invited to sing in several seasons and concerts in Italy ... Nabucco (Fenena) at Teatro Talisio Tirinnanzi (Legnano) and at Teatro Besostri, the Tutto Verdi Gala with the baritone Massimo Cavalletti at Teatro dal Verme (Milan) and Rigoletto (Maddalena) at the XXIII Festival Sotto le stelle, again in Pavia. She is also a semifinalist of the International Contest Piemonte Opera Voci dal Mondo (2018, Turin) and selected by the Mythos Opera Festival for the opera season of the Antico Teatro di Taormina (2019, Sicily).
In the 19/20 season she makes her debut at the Las Palmas Opera in Fasltaff, singing the role of Meg, with a great response from the specialized critics, where she returns in 2021 to participate in La Cenerentola. She also sings Santuzza in Cavalleria rusticana at Teatro Calderón in Alcoy and, together with the pianist Puerto González, she performs a recital at Teatro de la Zarzuela with an unpublished work by Manuel Fernández Caballero, within the presentation of a book about the work of the 'maestro'.
It is worth highlighting her performance as Mercedes of the opera Carmen, in a semi-scenic version, at National Music Auditorium in Madrid and her participation in the Alma de Zarzuela Gala within the 28th Zarzuela Season of the Canary Islands. She works under the baton of conductors such as Miquel Ortega, Alexander Liebreich, Roberto Gianola, Rubén Díez and Luis Celada, among others.
Her recent engagements include the production María de Buenos Aires at Palacio de Festivales de Santander, playing the title role, and her debut in the Malaga opera season in Cavalleria rusticana (Lola), at Teatro Villamarta in Doña Francisquita (Aurora la Beltrana) and at Calderón in Valladolid in Carmen, singing the role of Mercedes.
More recently, she returns to Ópera de Las Palmas as Maddalena in Rigoletto, and debuts on the stage of Teatro Campoamor (Oviedo) with the roles of Frugola (Il tabarro) and Zita (Gianni Schicchi).
In her intense symphonic activity, she participates in the most important music festivals in the country such as the Soriano Musical Fall, the Madrid Sacred Music Festival or the Segovia MUSEG Festival and collaborates with orchestras such as Castilla y León Symphony, Orchestra Euskadi Symphony, Principality of Asturias Symphony Orchestra, Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra and Berlin Schlachtensee Chamber Orchestra.
Her interest in the music of contemporary composers allows her to premiere works such as the Requiem de la Aurora by María José Cordero (created in tribute to the victims of Covid-19) and Komorebi by Pilar Jurado.
In the field of chamber music, since 2020 she has been part of the Ensemble María de Pablos (voice, viola and piano), highlighting her participation in the Café Azaña cycle (2021), organized by the Ministry of the Presidency of the Government of Spain.
She will soon return to Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid to perform Amor brujo by Falla and to the Teatro Villamarta in Jerez, to debut the role of Suzuki in Madama Butterfly.
