Cuban-Puerto Rican soprano Megan Barrera is a native of Miami (Florida), and is an active performer of both opera and concert repertoire, especially in the United States. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree and a Master of Music Degree from Louisiana State University and a Bachelor of Music Degree from the University of Miami.
She is a prize winner to many international competitions including the Gabriela Beňačková International Vocal Competition in Czechia, the Concorso Lírico Premio Koliqi in Italy, the Jensen Foundation Vocal Competition in New York, and the first prize winner of the Certamen Nuevas Voces Ciudad de Sevilla, Spain.
She has performed with Sarasota Opera, Vero Beach Opera, Miami Lyric Opera, Wichita Grand Opera, Opera Louisiane, Winter Opera St. Louis, Miami Beach Classical Music Festival, and Florida Grand Opera.
Her interpretation of the role of Donna Anna in Don Giovanni at the Miami Beach Classical Music Festival was highly praised by critics, as well as her performance in the role of Norina in Don Pasquale with Miami Lyric Opera and Wichita Grand Opera.
Most recently, Ms. Barrera made her debut at Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville in La Traviata, as winner of the Nuevas Voces Competition. Prior to this engagement, she made her debut as Micaela in Carmen at the Josef Kajetán Tyl Theater in Plezñ (Czech Republic). Other operatic roles include Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), Musetta (La Bohème), Liù (Turandot) and Miss Jessel (The turn of the screw), among others.
Some of her latest engagements are highly acclaimed concerts with pianist, Francisco Soriano in Festival Musical de Cádiz, Spain and Amor a la Musica Espacio Turina, Seville, Spain. Ms. Barrera also toured a 'Music of the Americas' recital with pianist, Dr. João Paulo Casarotti, performing in London, Lisbon, Philadelphia and different cities in Brazil.
Ms. Barrera was recently appointed Assistant Professor of Voice and Opera at New World School of the Arts College in Miami, FL.
